Around 10 million pensioners have now had their winter fuel payments cut, after the controversial plans came into force on Monday.

The axe has caused uproar, with key figures branding it a “disgrace”.

James Cleverly said removing the winter fuel payout was an “unbelievably foolish choice”, with more than two thirds of older people with disabilities set to miss out this year.

Robert Jenrick has also hit out at Sir Keir Starmer for the decision, accusing the Prime Minister of “declaring war” on pensioners.

Research from charity Independent Age has shown that older people will be “forced to make dangerous cutbacks” following the cuts.

Independent Age Chief Executive Joanna Elson, CBE said: “We are also concerned about the large group of older people that just miss out on Pension Credit.

“Many of them are in financial hardship and do not have enough money to live well, but will still have their income cut at an already challenging time of year with energy prices on the rise.”

The energy price cap is due to rise by 10 percent in October, further adding to the stress for older people trying to pay bills.

Warnings have also been issued over the cost that cutting winter fuel payments will have on the NHS.

Figures from Age UK show an estimated extra cost of £1.4bn a year for the NHS in treating the elderly for cold related conditions.

Analysis for the Sunday Express by Age UK has shown nearly one million pensioners in England live in homes which are too cold in the winter, have rising damp or bad condensation.

With temperatures only getting colder, experts are calling on Labour to reconsider their decision and scrap the cuts now.

Keir Starmer is in the midst of a freebie grabbing scandal as it was revealed he may have breached parliamentary rules by not declaring them properly.

The Labour Prime Minister Sir Starmer has found himself defending accepting thousands of pounds worth of clothing freebies for himself and his wife Lady Starmer.

Criticism continues to pile on top of the Labour leader as he’s slammed as a “screaming hypocrite” for condemning former PM Boris Johnson over similar issues, including the infamous donated wallpaper for his then Downing Street home.

ord Alli – whose wealth is estimated to be £200m – is Starmer’s biggest personal donor and has this year given the Labour leader £18,685 worth of work clothes and several pairs of glasses. Lord Alli was later given a pass to access No 10 Downing Street, despite having no formal Government role. The Prime Minister, however, suggested he would continue to take gifts from Lord Alli

Asked on Monday whether he would continue to accept gifts from Lord Alli, Sir Keir said that “all Members of Parliament get gifts” and “the important thing is that they’re declared in accordance with the rules”.

MPs are supposed to declare gifts and donations to the parliamentary authorities within 28 days of receiving them. The Prime Minister declared the gifts to his wife, thought to have been received both before and after he entered Downing Street, only last week after initially believing that they did not need to be added to the register.

MPs have to declare “any interest which someone might reasonably consider to influence their actions or words as an MP”, and the declarations are then published on the Register of Members’ Financial Interests.
