Rock Against Racism: Stunning Pictures of British Punk and Reggae Bands Using Music to Fight Fascism in the 1970s
Syd Shelton has been a street photographer in the UK and Australia for the past several decades. His iconic photographs of punk, protests and portraits help to tell England’s story of anti-racist activism.
In the 1970s Syd was one of the team of creatives who founded Rock Against Racism. Under the slogan “Love Music, Hate Racism”, it was one of the first organizations that actively showcased reggae and punk bands on the same stage, attracting large multicultural audiences. At a time when the National Front and fascist attitudes were gaining increasing support, Rock Against Racism marked the rising resistance to institutionalized and violent racism.
