Coronation Street 65th anniversary ‘exposed’ – Phelan return, tram crash and lottery win

Coronation Street will mark its 65th anniversary next year and fans have already started speculating how the ITV soap will celebrate the huge milestone.

Viewers will already know that bosses don’t hold back when it comes to marking big occasions. In 2020, Corrie’s 60th anniversary plot followed Ray Crosby’s attempts to bulldoze most of the street and the fate of Yasmeen Metcalfe during her trial for the attempted murder of her abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe.

It was the first anniversary special in the 21st Century not to feature a live episode, which was a tradition that started with the 40th Anniversary Live Special back in 2000.

Plans for the upcoming anniversary are yet to be revealed but it hasn’t stopped avid fans of the show to start predicting what might happen as Corrie turns 65.

Crash horror

Fans will remember the live episode to mark Corrie’s 50th anniversary back in December 2010, which featured a tram crash resulting in the deaths of Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold), Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) and an unnamed taxi driver.

Taking to Reddit, one user predicted that bosses will plan a similar tram crash that will “kill off” huge characters.

In response to a post asking fans “what are your hopes for the 65th anniversary?”, they wrote said: “Another tram crash in multiple directions that kills off most of the cast.”

Someone else added: “A good bus crash on a community trip to the lakes – with fatal consequences this time for a number of cast members.”

Huge return

Pat Phelan
Will Pat Phelan return next year?

Dodgy businessman Pat Phelan was killed off back in 2018 but fans are hoping the Weatherfield killer could somehow make a comeback for the 65th anniversary as part of the ongoing Institute group storyline.

Group leader Rowan Cunliffee (Emrhys Cooper) has manipulated Leanne Battersby into going his organisation and encouraged her to invest £40,000 in the business.

One reddit user suggested: “The whole street is deep rooted within the cult, with Rowan [Cunliffe] acting as supreme leader at level 379. Until a behemoth of a shadow appears at the end of the street. It CAN’T be, but IT IS. It’s Pat Phelan, he’s back.”

Lottery win

Another Corrie fan came up with the idea that a lucky Weatherfield resident could end up winning the Lottery and start secretly helping their neighbours in a heartwarming storyline.

One Reddit user said: “I would love an ‘At Home With The Braithwaites’ storyline. Someone on the street wins millions in the lottery and doesn’t tell anyone. They set up a business and/or a charity, anonymously help out friends and family. Something that touches everyone on the street and lasts for months.”

Fans will have to wait and see if any of the predictions come through when the soap marks the big anniversary in December 2025.
