Labour must stop patronising working-class voters and start to take immigration concerns seriously, Starmer tells Cabinet_Nhy

Labour must stop looking down on working-class voters and take immigration concerns seriously, Sir Keir Starmer has told his Cabinet.

In a 1,500-word letter to his top team, the Prime Minister said that his party had to recognise that working people felt let down by previous governments on migration and they must stop patronising them.

The PM raised an incident with a voter in Oldham, Greater Manchester, who had to ‘explain that she wasn’t a racist’ before talking to a Labour MP about immigration.

He added: ‘Somehow, politics ended up being too scared to say what is obvious – that some people are genuine refugees and some aren’t; that people coming here to work can be a positive, but that an island nation needs to control its borders.

‘What started with good faith paternalism has too readily become looking down at people.’

With Reform UK leading in the polls, Sir Keir also told ministers they must show the public that the immigration policies of Nigel Farage‘s party are not the answer to Britain’s problems.

Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice said last night: ‘Quite frankly it’s concerning the Prime Minister has to tell his own Cabinet to stop looking down on working-class voters and take immigration seriously.’
