Lee Anderson has accused Ed Miliband of “robbing” pensioners of the winter fuel allowance while “wasting” billions of pounds on other projects during a fiery Commons clash.
The Reform MP clashed with the Energy Secretary over Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to axe the lifeline for up to 10 million older people.
Mr Anderson shared his exchange with the Labour frontbencher on X.
In the post, he said: “Today I challenged Ed Miliband over the billions he is wasting whilst robbing our pensioners of their winter fuel allowance.”
Speaking in the Commons, Mr Anderson said: “This Secretary of State is absolutely living in a completely different world to my constituents, because they’re not asking for this on the doorstep, at all.
“This Secretary of State, by the way, is quite happy to spend £11.6 billion on climate aid abroad, £8.5 billion on GB energy, yet rob our pensioners of £300 at the same time.
“But I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt – will all my pensioners in Ashfield receive significant discounts on their fuel bills, and how much will it be by?”
The Express has been campaigning for the Labour Government to reverse its decision.
Labour said in July that it is changing the rules around the Government’s winter fuel payments scheme, so that it will no longer be universal for all pensioners in England and Wales.
Only pensioners on means-tested benefits will qualify for the help now, which is estimated to take the payments away from about 10 million people.
Up to 1.2 million people are eligible to claim for pension credit but have not done so, figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) showed.
Replying to Mr Anderson, Mr Miliband said: “This is the way to deliver lower bills for his constituents.
“The reality they have to face is this, which is: does he believe that continuing reliance on fossil fuels as a country, saying no to renewables – which I think is their position – will give us energy security? And the truth is, that it won’t,” he added.
