Today is My Birthday

The snow crunched beneath Daniel’s worn-out boots as he stood beside a small wooden stool, his birthday cake resting atop it. Three candles flickered in the cold wind, their tiny flames defiant against the winter chill. He brushed some snow off his tattered sweater, smiling despite the icy air nipping at his cheeks. Today was his birthday.

Unlike other children who celebrated indoors with colorful decorations and heaps of presents, Daniel’s celebration was simple—just him, the snow-covered yard, and the cake his mother had lovingly prepared. The frosting was uneven, the edges slightly rough, but to him, it was the most beautiful cake in the world.

His mother had saved every spare coin for weeks to buy the ingredients, whispering promises in the dark of the tiny, wooden house they shared. “It may be small, my love, but it’s made with all the love in my heart,” she had said, kissing his forehead the night before.

He closed his eyes, making a wish. He didn’t wish for toys or new clothes. He wished for warmth, for his mother’s laughter to never fade, for days when she wouldn’t have to work until her hands were raw. He took a deep breath and blew out the candles.

From the doorway, his mother watched, tears pooling in her eyes. She had done everything she could to make this day special, and seeing his smile made every sacrifice worth it. She clapped her hands together, her breath visible in the cold air. “Happy birthday, my sweet boy.”

Daniel turned, his eyes shining. “It’s perfect, Mama. The best birthday ever.”

At that moment, it didn’t matter that the wind was biting or that their home was small. Love filled every corner of their world, warming them more than any fire ever could.
